## Who they are

Tomyris rules a fierce nomadic people east of the Caspian, and when Cyrus the Great sends envoys proposing marriage, she sees through the offer and tells him plainly to stop. Cyrus then captures her son Spargapises by a trick, and the young man takes his own life in shame, leaving Tomyris to face the Persian king with a grief that turns into resolve. She is the Histories' great counterweight to Cyrus, a woman who will not be conquered by flattery or force and whose confrontation with him marks the limit of Persian expansion.
