## Who they are

Croesus sits at the opening of Herodotus' inquiry as the wealthiest man of his age, confident enough to quiz the Greek oracles and to mistake their riddling answers for permission to attack Persia. His court is where Solon delivers the speech about no man being called happy until he is dead, a lesson Croesus will spend the rest of the Histories learning in fire and chains. He matters because his fall sets the pattern for the entire work: greatness, misread prophecy, and the slow education of a king through disaster.
