Milesian deputy who, facing ruin at Persian hands, sparks the Ionian Revolt and then goes begging for help in Sparta and Athens.

## Who they are

Aristagoras inherits the tyranny of Miletus from his father-in-law Histiaios and quickly finds himself on the wrong side of Persian power. Rather than submit to being stripped of his rule, he raises Ionia in revolt and travels to mainland Greece to plead for ships and troops. His diplomatic mission draws Athens and Eretria into a war they will regret, making him the unlikely hinge on which the Persian Wars begin.
