## Who they are

Amasis rises from the ranks to seize the Egyptian throne, then rules with a canny mix of piety and pragmatism, cultivating Greek ties and warning Polycrates that unbroken good fortune invites divine envy. His alliance with Samos and his careful handling of the Persian threat show a ruler who understands the limits of power. When Cambyses finally comes, Amasis is already dead, and his son inherits a kingdom that cannot hold.
