# Poor Pussy — Hindu Tales from the Sanskrit character guide

> Poor Pussy in Hindu Tales from the Sanskrit by S. M. Mitra.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0018-i

## Snapshot

A cat whose very name invites pity, she becomes the unlikely hinge on which a tale of kindness and consequence turns.

## Who they are

Poor Pussy enters the narrative as a creature of small consequence, the sort of animal a woodcutter's children might feed scraps to without a second thought. Yet in the moral economy of these tales, the treatment of the vulnerable is never trivial, and her fortunes mirror the larger struggle between generosity and greed. Her presence tests the characters' capacity for compassion, making her far more than a passing detail in the story's ethical architecture.
