# Countess of Auvergne — Henry VI, Part I character guide

> Countess of Auvergne in Henry VI, Part I by William Shakespeare.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Countess, Countess Porter, Countess, Countess Victorious Talbot

**First appearance:** 0011-act-ii-scene-iii

## Snapshot

A French noblewoman who lures Talbot to her castle, expecting a monster, and finds a legend she cannot hold prisoner.

## Who they are

The Countess of Auvergne invites Talbot to her home intending to capture the man whose name alone terrifies French mothers. She is disappointed by his modest frame — 'a silly dwarf,' she calls him — until he winds his horn and summons the soldiers who are his true 'substance.' Her humbling is comic and pointed: it shows how Talbot's legend outstrips any single body, and how reputation itself is a weapon in this war.
