**First appearance:** 0013-act-iii-scene-ii

## Snapshot

A garrulous Gloucestershire justice who relives his wild youth for Falstaff's benefit and recruits men he cannot afford to lose.

## Who they are

Shallow presides over a sleepy corner of the kingdom where he reminisces endlessly about nights at Clement's Inn and the women he once knew, while Falstaff quietly sizes him up for money. His vanity and rambling nostalgia make him easy prey, yet his fussy hospitality and pride in his household give the country scenes their comic warmth. He embodies the provincial world the play keeps measuring against the court and the tavern.
