Chapter 3
Scene I
Lord Bardolph arrives at Northumberland's castle with false news of a victory at Shrewsbury, claiming Prince Hal is dead and Hotspur has triumphed. Travers then brings contradictory reports of rebellion's ill luck, and Morton finally confirms Hotspur's death and the king's victory. Northumberland, initially grief-stricken, becomes enraged and resolves to join the Archbishop of York's rebellion.
Chapter 4
Scene II
Falstaff, with his page, engages in witty banter and evades the Lord Chief Justice, who confronts him about his past misdeeds and his influence on Prince Hal. Falstaff deflects with humor and wordplay, ultimately revealing he is bound for military service against the rebels.
Chapter 5
Scene III
The Archbishop of York, along with Lords Hastings, Mowbray, and Bardolph, debate the viability of their rebellion against King Henry IV. They discuss their forces, the uncertain support of Northumberland, and the risks of proceeding without him, drawing lessons from Hotspur's defeat. The Archbishop reflects on the fickleness of the common people, who once cheered Bolingbroke and now long for Richard II.
