## Who they are

Falstaff is Hal's tavern companion, a self-proclaimed soldier who leads a raggedy troop of conscripts and delivers some of the play's funniest and most subversive speeches. He lies about his exploits at Gadshill, drinks endlessly, and yet articulates a cynical wisdom about honor and mortality that no one else in the play can match. His relationship with Hal — part father, part jester, part parasite — makes him the emotional counterweight to everything the court represents.
