# Joe Brownbie — Harry Heathcote of Gangoil character guide

> Joe Brownbie in Harry Heathcote of Gangoil by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Joe

**First appearance:** 0000-i-gangoil

## Snapshot

One of the Brownbie brothers at Boolabong, part of the clan whose feud with the German and with Heathcote keeps the Gangoil boundary tense.

## Who they are

Joe Brownbie belongs to the sprawling Boolabong family that Heathcote treats as the neighborhood's plague, and the Brownbies' internecine feud with Karl Bender gives Heathcote's suspicions a useful, if unreliable, source of information. The Brownbies are squatters in name, but their real economy is sheep-stealing and general mischief, and Joe is one of the sons who keep that economy running. His presence in the background of the fire-fear and the fence-line disputes makes the western boundary of Gangoil feel like a place where anything might happen.
