# George Brownbie — Harry Heathcote of Gangoil character guide

> George Brownbie in Harry Heathcote of Gangoil by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Georgie Brownbie, Georgie

**First appearance:** 0000-i-gangoil

## Snapshot

A Brownbie son seen riding with Boscobel near Boolabong, one of the clan Heathcote blames for the fires and thefts menacing Gangoil.

## Who they are

George Brownbie is one of the sons who give Boolabong its reputation, and Karl Bender catches sight of him with Boscobel on the morning Heathcote fears his run will burn. He belongs to the family Harry Heathcote considers vermin—men who would rather rob a neighbor than work a flock—and his presence on the boundary is exactly the kind of signal that sends Heathcote riding into the dark. In the novel's mounting crisis, Georgie stands for the threat that is always just over the fence: visible, mocking, and impossible to prove against.
