# Boscobel — Harry Heathcote of Gangoil character guide

> Boscobel in Harry Heathcote of Gangoil by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** V Boscobel

**First appearance:** 0000-i-gangoil

## Snapshot

A hard-drinking, horse-riding Brownbie associate whose name surfaces whenever Heathcote suspects fire, theft, or trouble on the Boolabong boundary.

## Who they are

Boscobel belongs to the loose fraternity of Boolabong hangers-on whom Harry Heathcote regards as the neighborhood's standing menace, and Karl Bender spots him riding with Georgie Brownbie on the very morning that fire threatens Gangoil. He is less a character than a weather-sign: his movements tell Heathcote that mischief is afoot on the western run. In the novel's tense middle stretch, his presence at Boolabong helps turn Heathcote's abstract suspicion of his neighbors into a concrete, urgent vigilance.
