Dickie Harding, a poor, lame orphan, lives miserably with his aunt until he meets Mr. Beale, a tramp who becomes his companion. Dickie discovers he can dream himself into a past life as a healthy, noble boy in Jacobean England, where he learns woodcarving and dog-keeping. After a failed burglary, Dickie is taken in by Lady Talbot but escapes to rejoin Beale. They start an honest life selling carved boxes and puppies, but Dickie is kidnapped by enemies of the Arden family. Rescued by his cousin Edred, Dickie is revealed as the rightful Lord Arden. He struggles with guilt over displacing his cousins and ultimately decides to sacrifice his present life, returning permanently to the Jacobean era to ensure their happiness and the safety of the treasure.
