Chapter 1
Book I
Isak arrives in the wilderness, builds a turf hut, acquires goats, and begins clearing land. Inger arrives at Sellanraa, they marry and have children. Inger kills her newborn child due to a harelip, is sentenced to prison, and later returns transformed. The family grows, and the settlement develops with new neighbors and the start of mining.
Chapter 2
I
The chapter depicts life at Sellanraa as the haymaking season brings visitors, including Oline who brings news of Old Sivert's diminished estate. Isak attends the auction at Breidablik, where Brede Olsen is selling his farm and has given up the telegraph business. Axel Ström bids on behalf of another. Meanwhile, Eleseus prepares to leave home again, receiving money from his parents and saying an emotional goodbye. He and Sivert stop at Maaneland, where Barbro invites them for coffee.
Chapter 3
Chapter II
Axel and Barbro's relationship deteriorates after Barbro's child is stillborn or killed. Barbro shows no remorse, and Axel grows suspicious and uneasy. Their life at Maaneland becomes strained, with Barbro longing for town life and Axel struggling to maintain control.
Chapter 4
Chapter III
Isak and Sivert discuss the arrival of a new settler, Aron, who has established a large farm called Storborg and plans to open a store. Meanwhile, Axel Ström, still troubled by Barbro's departure, goes out to fell timber and is pinned under a tree during a storm. He is eventually rescued by Brede Olsen and Oline, who argue over credit for the rescue.
Chapter 5
Chapter IV
The copper mine becomes a major attraction, drawing settlers and villagers alike. Inger visits the mine to assert her presence, while Gustaf's flirtation highlights her lingering desires. Eleseus struggles in town, working in a shop and disappointing his mother. The mine's operations expand with engineers and workers, and Aronsen's store prospers. Gustaf entertains the community with rockets and music, and Inger is stirred by the excitement.
