# How does Greenmantle develop the theme of Patriotism and Duty?

> Greenmantle by John Buchan

## Answer

Greenmantle by John Buchan develops Patriotism and Duty across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The narrative centers on Richard Hannay's willingness to undertake a dangerous secret mission for his country, contrasting the soldier's duty on the battlefield with the more solitary, high-stakes work of espionage, and emphasizing sacrifice for the greater good.

Hannay grapples with his sense of duty to his country, ultimately accepting a perilous mission despite personal misgivings.

Hannay and Blenkiron discuss their motivations for risking their lives for the Allied cause, despite Blenkiron's official neutrality.
