Concepts
Ideas that structure Greene Ferne Farm by Richard Jefferies — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Hierarchy
The book meticulously details the rigid social stratification of rural Victorian England, from the subtle distinctions in how long farmers keep their hats on in church to the hierarchical meaning of clothing, and the stark divide between landowners, farmers, and labourers.
Nature and the Pastoral Ideal
The natural world is depicted with lush, lyrical detail, serving as both a backdrop for human emotion and a symbol of eternal youth and beauty, contrasting with the harsh realities of rural labour and the aging of human characters.
Love and Romance
Romantic love drives the plot through the relationships of Geoffrey and Margaret, Felix and May, and the jealous rivalry of Valentine, with love portrayed as a transformative, sometimes painful, force that tests personal ideals and resolves social tensions.
Labour and Class Struggle
The narrative directly addresses the conflict between capital and labour, exemplified by the haymakers' strike, the backbreaking toil of gleaners, and the stubborn pride of agricultural workers, highlighting the economic pressures and injustices faced by the rural poor.
Time and Mortality
The relentless passage of time is symbolized by the mill-wheel's ceaseless motion, the aging of Andrew Fisher, and the recurring cycles of seasons, underscoring themes of decay, memory, and the inevitability of death against the backdrop of an unchanging landscape.
Avarice and Moral Decay
Andrew Fisher's miserly and cruel nature, hardened over ninety years, illustrates how greed and a lack of compassion lead to isolation and moral corruption, while his eventual financial loss and death serve as a cautionary tale.
Community and Tradition
The book portrays a tight-knit rural community bound by shared rituals like Sunday church, haymaking feasts, and gossip, while also showing the erosion of old customs and the tension between traditional ways and modern changes.
Jealousy and Rivalry
Valentine Browne's jealousy of Geoffrey Newton, sparked by romantic competition and exacerbated by misunderstandings, leads to a violent confrontation, demonstrating how unchecked envy can poison friendships and lead to tragedy.
