Hooty rules the hours after the Black Shadows creep out from the Purple Hills, and even clever Blacky the Crow shivers at the thought of being caught out after dark. He is less a schemer than a fact of the forest — patient, hungry, and nearly impossible to see until it is too late. His silent drift over the treetops gives the smaller animals a reason to hurry home and gives the story its constant low hum of dread.
