## Snapshot

A golfer in whom desire outruns performance, whose improbable championship win at Cape Pleasant sets a comic benefit match in motion.

## Who they are

Archibald Mealing is the beloved duffer of the Cape Pleasant Club, a man whose golf blends hockey, Swedish drill, and buck-and-wing dancing, yet whose generosity keeps him in everyone's good graces. In his thirty-first year, after six seasons of untiring effort, he somehow wins the club championship, a result so unlikely that it becomes the talk of the links. His benefit match grows out of that triumph, and his kindly, hapless nature makes him the emotional centre of the club's easygoing world.
