Hugo Danner, a man gifted with superhuman strength by his father's secret experiment, struggles to find his place in a world that fears and rejects him. From football fields to battlefields, his powers bring only isolation and despair, leading him on a tragic search for purpose.
Professor Abednego Danner creates a serum that grants superhuman abilities and secretly injects it into his pregnant wife. Their son, Hugo, is born with incredible strength and invulnerability. As a child, he discovers his powers but learns to hide them after facing fear and ostracism. In college, he excels at football but is expelled for his uncontrollable strength. He serves in World War I, where his powers make him a lethal soldier, yet he finds no glory, only horror. After the war, he drifts through jobs—manual labor, banking, farming—each ending in disaster when his true nature is revealed. He attempts to use his powers for political change but is rejected. Finally, he joins an expedition to Yucatan, hoping to create a new race of superhumans, but remains haunted by his isolation. The novel ends with Hugo still searching for a place in a world that cannot accept him.
