Chapter 1
Germinal Part I
Étienne Lantier arrives at the Voreux mine and is hired as a pikeman. He experiences his first day working underground, witnessing the harsh conditions and poverty of the mining community. The comfortable life of the Grégoires at Piolaine is contrasted with the Maheude's struggle to feed her family.
Chapter 2
I
Étienne Lantier, a young unemployed railway worker, arrives at the Voreux mine in search of work. He meets an old carman nicknamed Bonnemort, who describes the widespread poverty and industrial decline in the region. Bonnemort explains the workings of the mine and the Montsou Mining Company's vast wealth, while Étienne reflects on his own desperate situation and the ominous, beast-like presence of the pit.
Chapter 3

The Maheu family awakens before dawn to prepare for another day of work at the Voreux mine. The chapter depicts the cramped, impoverished conditions of their home, the struggle to feed ten family members, and the exhausting routine of the miners. Catherine, the eldest daughter, rises first to make coffee and prepare the 'bricks' of bread and cheese for the family to take to the pit. The parents, Maheu and Maheude, discuss their dire financial situation, with only nine francs coming in and sixty francs owed to Maigrat. Maheude plans to visit the Piolaine people, hoping for charity. The chapter ends with the miners heading out into the cold, dark morning.

Étienne Lantier descends into the Voreux mine for the first time, guided by Maheu and accompanied by Catherine, Zacharie, and Levaque. He navigates the dark, narrow, and increasingly hot galleries, learning the harsh conditions of mining. After being hired as a pikeman, he joins the cage descent, feeling the oppressive weight of the shaft and the camaraderie of the miners.
Chapter 5
IV
Étienne experiences his first day working in the Voreux mine, learning the brutal physical demands of the job from Catherine and the other pikemen. He shares a meal with Catherine, revealing his past as a railway worker dismissed for striking his chief and his family's history of alcoholism. The chapter vividly depicts the harsh conditions underground, including the cramped, wet, and dangerous cutting where Maheu and the others toil.
