# Mr. Ah Loi — Gallions Reach character guide

> Mr. Ah Loi in Gallions Reach by H. M. Tomlinson.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ah Loi

**First appearance:** 0001-gallions-reach

## Snapshot

A Penang host and porcelain collector who speaks of unnamed communions and tells Colet that the best things have no name.

## Who they are

Ah Loi receives Colet into a house of precious glazes and quiet philosophy, defending his lovely shapes against the world's carelessness with the argument that what has been done cannot be lost from the sum. His wife meets them at tiffin with droll banter and a fastidious hand, and the household's easy assurance unsettles Colet even as it heartens him. He matters because his talk of Kuan-yin, Shakespeare's indifference, and things that persist like an anonymous benevolence gives Colet a confirmation of his own nebulous faith at a moment when he needs it.
