# Helen Denny — Gallions Reach character guide

> Helen Denny in Gallions Reach by H. M. Tomlinson.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Helen

**First appearance:** 0001-gallions-reach

## Snapshot

A classical beauty with a haughty profile and little lines at her mouth, Helen commands her table and resists the easy admiration of the men who watch her.

## Who they are

Helen moves through the restaurant and smoke-room as the picture of the place, admired by Jimmy but never quite accepting him, talking calmly with Doris while the biologist and critic spar. Her tension lies in that reserve: warm perhaps, but not cosy, a woman whose bosom was meant for privileged joy yet who keeps her own counsel. She matters because her withheld approval measures the distance between Colet's world of bales and casks and the sharper, more modern appetites gathering around him.
