Concepts
Ideas that structure Futility by William Gerhardie — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Futility and Meaninglessness
The book's title and narrative emphasize the futility of human efforts, from the narrator's failed schemes to the Bursanov family's endless waiting for goldmines and political change, suggesting life is a series of pointless struggles.
Family and Dysfunction
The Bursanov family is a web of illegitimate relationships, quarrels, financial dependency, and emotional manipulation, with characters like Fanny Ivanovna and Nikolai Vasilievich trapped in a cycle of conflict and compromise.
Love and Illusion
Love is portrayed as both a redeeming force and a source of self-deception, as seen in the narrator's obsession with Nina and Fanny Ivanovna's sacrifice of respectability for a love that remains unfulfilled.
Social and Political Chaos
The Russian Revolution and Civil War form a backdrop of disorder, with characters like Uncle Kostia and the General debating the absurdity of bloodshed, while the family's personal dramas mirror the nation's collapse.
Identity and Belonging
The narrator's mixed heritage and rootlessness, along with Fanny Ivanovna's German accent and the family's shifting allegiances, highlight the theme of not fitting in—culturally, nationally, or within one's own family.
Optimism vs. Pessimism
Characters oscillate between blind optimism (e.g., Stanitski, Nikolai Vasilievich's faith in the mines) and bitter pessimism, with the narrator reflecting that 'a fool is an optimist' and that hope often leads to disappointment.
Sacrifice and Respectability
Fanny Ivanovna's story reveals how she sacrificed her own reputation and marriage for the children, yet craves the respectability denied her, illustrating the tension between personal sacrifice and social convention.
Art vs. Life
The narrator's initial attempt to treat life as a novel is abandoned when he realizes 'real life' is messier and more vital than art, a theme echoed in Fanny Ivanovna's plea for writers to capture 'real drama' rather than neat fiction.
