## Who they are

Wessner works the timber gang while secretly conspiring with Black Jack, giving the thieves inside knowledge of the Limberlost's lines and its lone watchman. His double role makes him a slow-burning threat, the kind of ordinary face that hides a cut wire or a waiting ambush. He matters because he forces Freckles to learn that the swamp's dangers are not only beasts and darkness but men who smile and steal.
