# The Bird Woman — Freckles character guide

> The Bird Woman in Freckles by Gene Stratton-Porter.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Bird Woman

**First appearance:** 0005-iv

## Snapshot

A patient naturalist who camps in the Limberlost to photograph nesting birds, she opens the swamp to outsiders and gives Freckles a reason to welcome visitors.

## Who they are

She works the Limberlost with a camera, returning again and again to the same nest over weeks, and it is her project that brings the Angel back into Freckles' territory. Her need for access collides with the swamp's heat, distance, and danger, so she depends on Freckles' knowledge of trails and shelter even as she grants him a new kind of company. Her quiet persistence turns the swamp from a solitary post into a place where trust and tenderness can take root.
