Chapter 2
Freckles
The chapter introduces Freckles, a young man with a missing hand who secures a job as a guard in the Limberlost swamp. He overcomes his initial fear of the swamp and begins to find purpose and belonging in his new role.
Chapter 3

Freckles, a one-handed young man with no family name, seeks work at the Limberlost lumber camp. Despite initial rejection by the cook, he impresses the Boss, Mr. McLean, with his determination and honesty. McLean hires him as the guard of the Limberlost lease, a dangerous job requiring courage and vigilance against thieves and the swamp's perils.
Chapter 4
Wherein Freckles proves his mettle and finds friends
Freckles begins his job as guard of the Limberlost, enduring intense fear and physical hardship. He overcomes his terror of the swamp, learns to use his revolver, and gradually befriends the birds and animals. Mrs. Duncan offers him maternal warmth, and Freckles, deeply moved, kisses her hand in gratitude.
Chapter 5
Wherein a feather falls and a soul is born
Freckles endures the bitter winter happily, finding freedom and appreciation. As spring arrives, he becomes restless and anxious, longing to understand the natural world around him. He confesses to Mr. McLean that his trouble is a desire for books to learn about the swamp's wonders. McLean agrees to help, and Freckles witnesses a Luna moth emerging from its cocoon, which deepens his yearning for knowledge.
