## Who they are

Mrs. Grantly moves through Barsetshire society as a matron of weight and propriety, the wife of a clergyman more thought of than the bishop himself. She has a heart and a faith beneath the worldly weight pressed on her, and after Griselda's wedding she sits alone and wonders whether her daughter's flawless education left out something her own heart had sighed for. Her quiet remorse gives the novel's satire of matchmaking its tenderest edge.
