## Who they are

Dr. Grantly is a churchman of large income and larger expectations, son of a bishop and father of a beautiful daughter he means to place well. He moves through the novel's clerical politics with shrewdness and a keen eye for advantage, whether at Plumstead or in Mrs. Proudie's orbit. His ambitions for Griselda and his rivalry with the Proudies give the story its sharpest social comedy.
