First Lensman
The chapter details the early formation of the Galactic Patrol and the selection of the first Lensmen, focusing on the challenges faced by Virgil Samms and his allies as they establish a force to combat the growing threat of Boskone. The chapter opens with a confrontation between Gharlane of Eddore and an Arisian, revealing the ancient cosmic struggle between Arisia and Eddore. The Arisian explains that they have been secretly guiding the development of intelligent life on various planets, including Tellus, through bloodlines like the Kinnisons and the red-bronze-auburn haired line. After Gharlane's failed attack, the Arisians launch a coordinated assault on Eddore, capturing and probing an Eddorian to gain crucial knowledge. They then withdraw, allowing Eddore to repel the lesser attack, ensuring the Eddorians underestimate Arisia. The Arisians foresee that their ultimate victory will require their own sacrifice.
Chapter 4
Chapter II: The Arisian Solution
Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison discuss the mysterious planet Arisia, which no ship can approach, and the inexplicable genius of Nels Bergenholm, who solved the free drive problem. Bergenholm insists Samms must go to Arisia to obtain a telepathic symbol for Civilization. Samms decides to go immediately aboard the Chicago. The chapter also shows a tense mixed-doubles tennis match between Jack Kinnison and Jill Samms, revealing their competitive relationship.

Samms returns from Arisia with the Lens and a profound understanding of his mission. Mentor explains the purpose of the Lens, the nature of good and evil, and the heavy responsibility Samms will bear. Samms is shocked to learn of his daughter Virgilia's hidden talents and future role. He and Kinnison confer deeply, and Samms struggles with the weight of selecting the first Lensmen.
