Chapter 1
Chapter I
Nikolai Petrovitch Kirsanov, a gentleman in his early forties, waits at a posting station for his son Arkady, who has just graduated from university. The chapter provides a detailed backstory of Nikolai's life: his upbringing as the son of a general, his education, his marriage to Masha (the daughter of a petty official), their happy life together, her death in 1847, and his subsequent years managing his estate. The chapter ends with the emotional reunion between father and son.
Chapter 2
II
Arkady Kirsanov returns home from university, introducing his friend and mentor Yevgeny Bazarov to his father, Nikolai Petrovitch. The three set off for the family estate at Maryino.
Chapter 3
III
Arkady returns home with his father Nikolai Petrovitch, who reveals that Fenitchka is living with him. Arkady reassures his father and reflects on the impoverished state of the countryside, feeling a need for reform. Bazarov interrupts a moment of shared poetry, and they arrive at Maryino.
Chapter 4
Chapter IV
Arkady and Bazarov arrive at Maryino and are welcomed by Nikolai Petrovitch and Pavel Petrovitch. Bazarov observes Pavel's aristocratic mannerisms with amusement, while Arkady feels awkward returning home as an adult. After supper, the household settles in, with Nikolai reflecting on his son's return, Pavel brooding in his study, and Fenitchka watching over her baby.
Chapter 5
Chapter V
Arkady reassures his father Nikolai about his relationship with Fenitchka, then meets his half-brother Mitya. Pavel Petrovitch questions Arkady about Bazarov, leading to a discussion of nihilism. Bazarov returns from collecting frogs for experiments, and Fenitchka brings Pavel his cocoa, causing awkwardness.
