# Anastasie de Restaud — Father Goriot character guide

> Anastasie de Restaud in Father Goriot by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Nasie, Comtesse de Restaud, Mme. de Restaud, Anastasie

**First appearance:** 0001-father-goriot

## Snapshot

Goriot's elder daughter, a countess whose aristocratic marriage and fashionable salon mask debts, a faithless lover, and a father she refuses to acknowledge.

## Who they are

Anastasie has climbed into the old nobility through marriage, but her husband's cold control and her own extravagance have entangled her with the moneylender Gobseck and a scandalous affair. She treats her father as an embarrassment to be visited in secret, even as she depends on his dwindling money. Her brittle respectability shows how the daughters' social triumph is built directly on Goriot's ruin.
