Concepts
Ideas that structure Fantômas by Pierre Souvestre — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Crime and Justice
The book centers on the pursuit of the master criminal Fantômas, exploring the nature of crime, the limitations of the justice system, and the cat-and-mouse game between detectives like Juve and elusive villains.
Identity and Deception
Characters frequently assume false identities, disguise themselves, or are mistaken for others, as seen with Gurn being suspected as Fantômas, actors mimicking criminals, and the use of aliases and hidden motives.
Social Class and Morality
The narrative contrasts the wealthy aristocracy (Marquise de Langrune, Lady Beltham) with lower-class criminals and servants, questioning whether morality and respectability are tied to social standing.
Fear and Terror
Fantômas is defined by his ability to 'spread terror,' and the book repeatedly depicts characters paralyzed by fear, whether from crime, supernatural hints, or psychological manipulation.
Science and Modernity
The story highlights modern tools like telegraphs, motorcars, and anthropometric measurements (fingerprints, photographs) used by both criminals and police, reflecting early 20th-century anxieties about technology aiding evil.
Obsession and Vengeance
Inspector Juve is obsessively dedicated to capturing Fantômas, while characters like Lady Beltham and Gurn are driven by personal vendettas or compulsive behaviors that lead to tragedy.
Theatricality and Performance
Crimes are staged like theatrical productions, with actors like Valgrand mimicking real murderers, and Fantômas himself using elaborate disguises and dramatic escapes, blurring the line between reality and performance.
Gender and Power
Women like Lady Beltham and the Baronne de Vibray navigate male-dominated spheres, often wielding influence through wealth or charm, yet are frequently victimized or suspected, revealing tensions around female agency.
