Fables
A collection of moral tales featuring anthropomorphic animals and mythical beings, each illustrating lessons about human nature, virtue, and folly.
Chapter 2
The Fox and the Grapes
A hungry Fox tries repeatedly to reach some grapes hanging high on a trellis, but fails. He then walks away dismissively, claiming the grapes were sour anyway.
Chapter 3
The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs
A Man and his Wife, blessed with a goose that lays a golden egg each day, grow impatient with their gradual wealth and kill the goose hoping to get all the gold at once, only to find the bird ordinary inside, losing both their daily treasure and any chance of sudden riches.
Chapter 4
The Cat and the Mice
A Cat infiltrates a house overrun with Mice, devouring them one by one. The Mice retreat to their holes, so the Cat feigns death by hanging from a peg to lure them out. A Mouse sees through the trick and warns the others not to be deceived by someone once proven dangerous.
Chapter 5
The Mischievous Dog
A dog that bites without provocation is given a bell by his master as a warning to others. The dog mistakes the bell for a mark of honor, but an older dog corrects him, explaining it is a badge of disgrace. The fable warns against confusing notoriety with fame.
