Chapter 3
Eugene Onegin
The novel opens with a portrayal of Eugene Onegin, a jaded young aristocrat who inherits his uncle's estate and moves to the countryside. He befriends the poet Vladimir Lenski, who introduces him to the Larin family. Tattiana, the elder daughter, falls deeply in love with Onegin and writes him a passionate letter, which he coldly rejects. At a name-day party for Tattiana, Onegin flirts with Lenski's fiancée Olga, provoking Lenski to challenge him to a duel. Onegin kills Lenski in the duel, then leaves the estate. Tattiana later visits Onegin's abandoned house, reads his books, and begins to understand him. She is taken to Moscow for the marriage market and eventually marries a prince. Years later, Onegin meets her again in St. Petersburg society, now a sophisticated princess. He falls desperately in love and writes to her, but Tattiana rejects him, remaining faithful to her husband.
Chapter 4
Canto the First: "The Spleen"
The narrator introduces the hero, Eugene Onegin, a young dandy from St. Petersburg who inherits his uncle's estate. Onegin is educated in a superficial manner, skilled in the art of seduction, and quickly becomes disillusioned with high society. He abandons social life, attempts to read and write but fails, and befriends the narrator. The chapter ends with Onegin's father dying and him awaiting his uncle's inheritance.
Chapter 5
I
The poet reflects on his early education in the Lyceum, where he preferred Apuleius over Cicero, and describes the first appearance of the Muse in his youth, who inspired his early poetic endeavors.
