Paine distinguishes society, which arises from natural wants and promotes happiness, from government, which is a necessary evil born from human wickedness, and argues that government should be limited and serve only to protect security.
Independence and Self-Governance
The book advocates for American independence from Britain, arguing that continued dependence is harmful and that the colonies have both the right and the interest to establish their own government based on republican principles.
