Concepts
Ideas that structure Erewhon Revisited by Samuel Butler — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Religion and Credulity
The book explores how a single miraculous event can spawn a new religion, complete with temples, priests, relics, and exploitation of public faith, satirizing the development of religious institutions and the gullibility of followers.
Hypocrisy and Deception
The epigraph condemns those who say one thing and hide another, a theme echoed throughout as characters like Hanky and Panky manipulate truth for personal gain, while Higgs himself navigates a web of lies and half-truths.
Truth and Perception
Higgs's story is doubted and distorted by society, with his credibility attacked by figures like Chowbok, highlighting how truth can be undermined by rumor, prejudice, and the passage of time.
Social Class and Ambition
Higgs's rise and fall in public esteem, his poverty as a pavement artist, and the social maneuvering of the Professors illustrate how class and ambition shape reputation and opportunity.
Family and Legacy
The relationship between Higgs and his sons—both his English son and his Erewhonian son George—explores themes of paternity, inheritance, and the desire to leave a positive mark on one's children.
Satire of Institutions
The book satirizes academic, religious, and legal institutions, such as the Colleges of Unreason, the Deformatory for Boys, and the Musical Banks, mocking their absurdities and self-serving nature.
Cultural Relativism
Erewhon's inverted customs—like punishing illness and rewarding crime—challenge the reader's assumptions about morality and normalcy, emphasizing how cultural context shapes values.
Memory and Nostalgia
Higgs's return to Erewhon triggers vivid memories of his past, and his encounters with distorted versions of his own words and actions evoke a sense of loss and the passage of time.
