Montgomery. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Laura, Murray, Laura Murray, the Murray, Aunt Laura.вАЭ Laura Murray, poor Aunt Laura, Laura Murray tradishun **First appearance:** 0000-i-the-house-in-the-hollow ## Snapshot The gentler Murray sister, whose quiet kindness and small rebellions soften the harshness of New Moon and give Emily a rare taste of uncomplicated affection. ## Who they are Where Aunt Elizabeth commands, Aunt Laura soothes; she is the aunt who slips Emily small comforts and defends her when she can, without ever quite daring to defy the family code outright. Her tenderness is real but timid, and her position as the unmarried sister under Elizabeth's roof makes her both ally and bystander. She matters because she shows Emily—and the reader—that Murray pride is not the only inheritance available at New Moon. ## In the story ### [A Watch in the Night](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/ii-a-watch-in-the-night) Aunt Laura is mentioned as living at New Moon Farm and resembling Juliet in eyes and voice. ### [A Hop Out of Kin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/iii-a-hop-out-of-kin) Emily wishes Aunt Laura would take her, remembering her father's kind words about her. ### [Diamond Cut Diamond](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/v-diamond-cut-diamond) Aunt Laura comforts Emily after the drawing, expresses gladness that Emily is coming to New Moon, and offers a kind, understanding presence during the journey. ### [VI: New Moon](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/vi-new-moon) Shows kindness to Emily, offering comfort when she seems cold or upset. ### [The Book of Yesterday](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/vii-the-book-of-yesterday) Sets the breakfast table and is mentioned as part of the household at New Moon. ### [Trial by Fire](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/viii-trial-by-fire) Makes a sentimental comment about Emily's apron having been her mother's, but is overruled by Aunt Elizabeth. ### [A Special Providence](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/ix-a-special-providence) Aunt Laura shows kindness to Emily and inadvertently provides her with writing paper by uncovering old letter-bills. ### [X: Growing Pains](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/x-growing-pains) Aunt Laura is mentioned as having brought Emily a hair ribbon from Shrewsbury. ### [XI: Ilse](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xi-ilse) Secretly lets Emily out of the spare-room, shows kindness, and advises Emily to hide her boots to avoid punishment. ### [XIII: Daughter of Eve](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xiii-daughter-of-eve) Laura leaves supper for Emily; she returns with Elizabeth to discover Emily's tragic declaration. ### [Fancy Fed](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xiv-fancy-fed) Aunt Laura calls the children home at the end of the evening with her kind, silvery voice. ### [Living Epistles](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xvii-living-epistles) Makes Emily a birthday cake and gives her a petticoat and a piece of pink satin brocade. ### [Father Cassidy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xviii-father-cassidy) Aunt Laura weeps over the impending loss of the bush and the ruin of New Moon's beauty. ### [By Aerial Post](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xx-by-aerial-post) Takes Ilse to the recitation contest, lets Emily wear her mother's sash, and comforts Emily after Christmas. ### [Romantic but Not Comfortable](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xxi-romantic-but-not-comfortable) Receives the letter from Great-Aunt Nancy; helps dress Emily for the photograph. ### [Wyther Grange](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xxii-wyther-grange) Supports Emily's visit to Great-Aunt Nancy and is privy to the playacting in Lofty John's bush. ### [The Vow of Emily](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xxvii-the-vow-of-emily) Aunt Laura shows a softer side when mentioning Emily's mother, and advises Emily to quietly continue wearing her bang despite Aunt Elizabeth's disapproval. ### [A Weaver of Dreams](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xxviii-a-weaver-of-dreams) Defends Emily's appearance privately after Aunt Ruth criticizes her, but does not say it within Emily's hearing. ### [XXIX: Sacrilege](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xxix-sacrilege) Delivers the summons to Emily that Aunt Elizabeth wants to see her in the parlour. ### [When the Curtain Lifted](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/chapters/xxx-when-the-curtain-lifted) Worries over Ilse; nurses Emily through her illness; tells Emily the full story of Beatrice Burnley's death. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/characters/aunt_laura - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/emily_of_new_moon_se/characters
