Manipulation and Showmanship in Evangelism
Elmer treats preaching as a performance, using oratory, emotional manipulation, and theatrical techniques to sway audiences, highlighting the commercialization and superficiality of revivalist religion.
Ambition and the Pursuit of Power
Elmer's relentless drive for status, wealth, and influence drives the plot, as he climbs from a small-town drunk to a nationally recognized religious leader, often at the expense of integrity.
Gender and Sexuality
The novel portrays women as objects of Elmer's desire and manipulation, while also critiquing the double standards of purity and the exploitation of female devotion within the church.
Class and Social Climbing
Elmer's career is marked by strategic social maneuvering, as he ingratiates himself with wealthy businessmen and elites, revealing how class and money shape religious institutions.
Faith vs. Skepticism
The book contrasts genuine belief (represented by characters like Frank Shallard) with Elmer's cynical exploitation of faith, and includes debates on atheism, science, and biblical literalism.

Sinclair Lewis attacks organized religion as a business, showing churches as bureaucratic, intolerant, and more concerned with money, membership, and morality policing than with genuine spirituality.
