Chapter 1
El Dorado
The chapter opens with a vivid description of the Parisian mob's fervent patriotism and their obsession with the 'El Dorado' of liberty and equality. The narrative shifts to the Committee of Public Safety, where Chauvelin and Héron discuss the ongoing threat of the Scarlet Pimpernel and the need to capture him. Chapter 2
In the Théâtre National
On the evening of January 16, 1794, the Théâtre National is packed for a revival of Molière's Le Misanthrope. The chapter contrasts the city's pursuit of pleasure with the ever-present terror of the guillotine. In a darkened box, Armand St. Just and Baron de Batz observe the audience, identifying key revolutionary figures like Foucquier-Tinville and Héron. De Batz explains the new decree granting spies like Héron sweeping powers of arrest and search, rewarding them 35 livres for each victim sent to the guillotine. Armand, idealistic and horrified, argues for rescuing the innocent, but de Batz counsels patience, viewing the bloodshed as a necessary step toward restoring the monarchy.
Chapter 3
Widely Divergent Aims
Armand St. Just returns to Paris after fifteen months abroad, finding the city transformed by the Terror. He encounters the Baron de Batz, who argues that the Scarlet Pimpernel's rescue efforts only prolong the revolution by removing victims who would otherwise provoke reprisals. Their conversation reveals the fundamental conflict between the League's humanitarian aims and de Batz's monarchist political goals.
Chapter 4
The Demon Chance
Armand St. Just finds himself trapped in a theater box with the manipulative Royalist de Batz, who tries to convince him that the Revolution's horrors are a necessary evil. As Armand prepares to leave, he is captivated by the voice and presence of actress Jeanne Lange on stage. De Batz, seeing an opportunity to keep Armand close, offers to introduce him to her after the play, setting Armand on a fateful path.
Chapter 5
IV: Mademoiselle Lange
Armand St. Just and de Batz visit the actress Jeanne Lange at her lodgings. Jeanne expresses admiration for the Scarlet Pimpernel and presses Armand for details about him, but he remains discreet. She reveals her emotional distress over the Dauphin's plight, though she remains largely detached from the political turmoil, absorbed in her art. The chapter ends with Jeanne inviting Armand to visit again, and Armand, already smitten, eagerly accepts.
