Scene I
King Edward III asserts his claim to the French throne, defies the Duke of Lorraine's ultimatum, and prepares for war while also addressing a Scottish invasion that threatens the Countess of Salisbury.
Chapter 3
Scene II
The Countess of Salisbury, besieged by the Scots, anxiously awaits aid from King Edward. King David of Scotland and his forces arrive, boasting of their plans to ravage England, but a messenger reports the approach of the English army, forcing the Scots to flee in panic. The Countess mocks their retreat. Sir William Mountague arrives and announces the king's presence. King Edward enters, is struck by the Countess's beauty, and despite initial hesitation, agrees to stay at her castle.

Chapter 5
Scene I
King Edward III, consumed by lust for the Countess of Salisbury, attempts to seduce her through a series of manipulative tactics. He first tries to command her father, Warwick, to persuade her to become his mistress, but Warwick is torn between his oath to the king and his moral duty. The Countess herself rebuffs the king's advances with eloquent arguments about virtue, marriage, and divine law, ultimately rejecting his proposition. Warwick, after initially presenting the king's case, recants and praises his daughter's integrity.
