# Horace Pentland — Early Autumn character guide

> Horace Pentland in Early Autumn by Louis Bromfield.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Cousin Horace, this shadowy old man

**First appearance:** 0004-ii

## Snapshot

The shadowy exiled Pentland brother whose buried scandal the family has spent decades smoothing over with silence and good manners.

## Who they are

Horace Pentland is the Pentland the family does not discuss—an absence that shapes the household as surely as any presence, a name that flinches through conversations about lineage and respectability. His exile is the unhealed wound beneath the family's polished surface, the proof that Pentland virtue can crack. For Olivia and Sybil, groping toward lives of their own, his fate is a warning and a temptation: what happens to a Pentland who breaks the mold.
