Chapter 1
I: The Cry
The chapter opens with a meditation on childhood and fate, then recounts the evening when Peter and Hedvig hear a strange cry from their parents' bedroom. While locked in the dining room with Old Hök's portrait, they are consumed by fear. The next day, their mother and newborn sibling die.
Chapter 2
II: The Robber’s Stronghold
The Selamb children and their neighbor Herman play a funeral game in the attic, then move to the roof to play robbers. A dispute over imaginary conquests leads to a fight, with Peter manipulating Herman into giving him a marble. Kristin scolds them, and later Tord is found asleep on the roof.
Chapter 3
III: The Dance of the Crow Indians
Oskar Selamb sits in the garden, a broken man after his wife's death, his spirit crushed by his father Enoch's tyranny. His children, playing as Crow Indians, tie him up and mock him, acting out their resentment. Old Hermansson arrives, frees Oskar, and scolds the children, but Laura and Stellan show little remorse.
Chapter 4
Peter the Watchdog
Peter struggles with his studies and his inability to concentrate, feeling a restless suspicion towards the bailiff Brundin. He spies on Brundin's preparations for a crayfish party, broods over the decay of the Selamb estate, and tries to gather information about Brundin's dealings from the laborer Anders, but learns nothing. The chapter culminates in the lavish party and fireworks display, which Peter watches from a tree, feeling excluded and resentful.
Chapter 5
V: Fear
Hedvig's inner world is dominated by fear, shaped by Kristin's tales of the Bogey Man and a punishing God. Her terror evolves into a morbid curiosity about sin and sexuality, culminating in her spying on Brundin and Frida. On her confirmation day, she is torn between revulsion and obsession with Brundin, receiving gifts from her guardian and Brundin while trembling with conflicted emotions.
