Ideas that structure Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Friendship and Loyalty
The story emphasizes the bonds between Dorothy, the Wizard, Zeb, and the animals, who support each other through perilous adventures and rely on old friends like Ozma and the Scarecrow for rescue and welcome.
Home and Belonging
Dorothy and Zeb both feel a strong pull to return to their families and farms in Kansas and California, while the Wizard finds a permanent home in Oz, highlighting the tension between adventure and the comfort of home.
Humbug vs. True Magic
The Wizard is repeatedly described as a 'humbug' who relies on tricks and machinery rather than real magic, yet his cleverness and showmanship are valued and effective, contrasting with the genuine magical powers of Ozma and the Magic Belt.
Justice and Fair Trial
When Eureka the kitten is accused of eating a piglet, Ozma convenes a formal trial with a judge, jury, and defense, demonstrating the importance of due process and the revelation of truth over hasty punishment.
Courage and Resourcefulness
The characters repeatedly face dangerous situations—earthquakes, hostile Gargoyles, and imprisonment—and overcome them through bravery, quick thinking, and teamwork rather than brute force or magic.
Transformation and Identity
Characters undergo changes in form and status, such as Ozma’s transformation from a boy to a girl, the Sawhorse being brought to life, and Jim the cab-horse receiving respect and a new home, exploring how identity can shift.
Hospitality and Generosity
The Land of Oz, especially Princess Ozma, welcomes the travelers with lavish feasts, comfortable rooms, and celebrations, showing a society built on kindness and the generous treatment of guests.
Adventure and Exploration
The narrative is driven by a journey through strange underground lands—the Glass City, the wooden Gargoyle country, and the cave—highlighting the thrill and danger of exploring unknown worlds.
