# Zeb — Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz character guide > Zeb in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Quick Zeb, Zeb of Hugson, Hugson **First appearance:** 0003-i-the-earthquake ## Snapshot A ranch boy from Hugson's who gets yanked from California soil into Oz, asking the practical questions nobody else bothers to ask. ## Who they are Zeb is the newcomer in a party of Oz veterans, uneasy at the thought of a land full of talking animals and uncertain whether he can fight when it counts. He clings to the Wizard as a fellow outsider and worries openly about Dorothy when she vanishes from sight. His skepticism and willingness — however doubtful — to stand his ground make him the reader's stand-in as the group descends into the Valley of Voe and beyond. ## Relationships ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ The Wizard acts as a mentor and friend to Zeb, guiding him through the strange lands they visit. ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy and Zeb are childhood friends and companions on their adventures, sharing a loyal and caring bond. ### [Jim the Cab-Horse](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/jim_the_cab_horse) _friendship_ Jim is Zeb's loyal horse, and they share a strong bond of trust and mutual care. ### [Eureka the Kitten](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/eureka_the_kitten) _friendship_ Eureka and Zeb are friendly companions, with Zeb often amused by the kitten's cleverness. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Ozma is a gracious host and friend to Zeb, welcoming him to Oz with kindness. ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ The Wizard acts as a mentor and friend to Zeb, guiding him through the strange lands they visit. ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ The Wizard acts as a mentor and friend to Zeb, guiding him through the strange lands they visit. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Ozma is a gracious host and friend to Zeb, welcoming him to Oz with kindness. ## In the story ### [Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/dorothy-and-the-wizard-in-oz) Dorothy's cousin, who assists in the journey through the underground. ### [The Earthquake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/i-the-earthquake) Dorothy's second cousin who works on Uncle Bill Hugson's ranch.
