# The Wizard — Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz character guide > The Wizard in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Mr. Wizard, the little Wizard, the Wizard of Oz, Oz, the Wonderful Wizard **First appearance:** 0005-iii-the-arrival-of-the-wizard ## Snapshot The jolly old humbug of Oz, back from his balloon voyage and cheerfully honest about being no wizard at all. ## Who they are The Wizard built the Emerald City and ruled it once by sheer showmanship, and he returns to Oz not to reclaim a throne but to revisit old friends like Jellia Jamb and the green-whiskered soldier. He carries a satchel of tricks and a jointed sword, and he is the first to admit he is no warrior. His fondness for the Munchkins, Winkies, Quadlings, and Gillikins — and his willingness to yell when fighting fails — make him the story's warm, self-aware anchor. ## Relationships ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Wizard share a close bond as fellow travelers from the human world and trusted companions. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Ozma and the Wizard have a respectful and cooperative friendship, with Ozma often relying on his wisdom and magic. ### [Eureka the Kitten](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/eureka_the_kitten) _friendship_ Eureka and the Wizard share a playful and tolerant relationship, with the Wizard often amused by her antics. ### [Zeb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/zeb) _friendship_ The Wizard acts as a mentor and friend to Zeb, guiding him through the strange lands they visit. ### [Jim the Cab-Horse](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/jim_the_cab_horse) _friendship_ Jim and the Wizard have a cordial relationship, with the Wizard often relying on Jim for transportation. ### [The Tin Woodman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_tin_woodman) _friendship_ The Tin Woodman and the Wizard are old friends and allies, with the Wizard having given him his heart. ### [The Gargoyles](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_gargoyles) _rivalry_ The Gargoyles are hostile creatures who attack the Wizard and his companions, viewing them as intruders. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Ozma and the Wizard have a respectful and cooperative friendship, with Ozma often relying on his wisdom and magic. ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Wizard share a close bond as fellow travelers from the human world and trusted companions. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Ozma and the Wizard have a respectful and cooperative friendship, with Ozma often relying on his wisdom and magic. ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Wizard share a close bond as fellow travelers from the human world and trusted companions. ### [Eureka the Kitten](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/eureka_the_kitten) _friendship_ Eureka and the Wizard share a playful and tolerant relationship, with the Wizard often amused by her antics. ## In the story ### [To My Readers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/to-my-readers) Readers requested more about him;
