# Eureka the Kitten — Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz character guide > Eureka the Kitten in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Eureka, the Kitten **First appearance:** 0003-i-the-earthquake ## Snapshot Dorothy's pink kitten, all appetite and mischief, whose longing for forbidden fruit threatens to make her vanish entirely. ## Who they are Eureka travels in Toto's place and immediately tests every boundary, from invisible hosts to the tempting damas fruit that would render her unseen. She is greedy, curious, and only barely obedient, deciding she won't touch the fruit but insisting Dorothy keep it away from her. Her small rebellions add a domestic, comic friction to the journey — and a quiet worry that Dorothy might lose her altogether. ## Relationships ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy is the owner and caretaker of Eureka, who is a mischievous but beloved pet. ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ Eureka and the Wizard share a playful and tolerant relationship, with the Wizard often amused by her antics. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Eureka is fond of Ozma, who indulges the kitten's whims and treats her with gentle amusement. ### [Jim the Cab-Horse](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/jim_the_cab_horse) _friendship_ Eureka and Jim have a playful and tolerant friendship, often teasing each other good-naturedly. ### [Zeb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/zeb) _friendship_ Eureka and Zeb are friendly companions, with Zeb often amused by the kitten's cleverness. ### [The Tin Woodman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_tin_woodman) _friendship_ Eureka is fond of the Tin Woodman, who treats her with gentle courtesy and amusement. ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy is the owner and caretaker of Eureka, who is a mischievous but beloved pet. ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ Eureka and the Wizard share a playful and tolerant relationship, with the Wizard often amused by her antics. ### [Dorothy Gale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/dorothy_gale) _friendship_ Dorothy is the owner and caretaker of Eureka, who is a mischievous but beloved pet. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Eureka is fond of Ozma, who indulges the kitten's whims and treats her with gentle amusement. ## In the story ### [To My Readers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/to-my-readers) New character introduced; Dorothy takes her kitten instead of Toto. ### [Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/dorothy-and-the-wizard-in-oz) Dorothy's pet kitten, who causes trouble and is later put on trial. ### [The Earthquake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/i-the-earthquake) Dorothy's kitten, carried in a birdcage covered with newspapers.
