# Dorothy Gale — Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz character guide > Dorothy Gale in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Dorothy, little Dorothy, V Dorothy **First appearance:** 0003-i-the-earthquake ## Snapshot A Kansas girl whose gentle nerve has carried her through Oz before, now tumbling into a new adventure with a kitten instead of Toto at her side. ## Who they are Dorothy arrives in this story fresh from California, separated from Toto and saddled with Eureka, a kitten whose manners leave much to be desired. She is the fixed star of Baum's Oz books — the child readers refused to let him retire — and her calm familiarity with witches, nome kings, and talking beasts steadies everyone around her. When the ground opens and swallows her companions into strange countries below, it is Dorothy's unshakable matter-of-factness that keeps the group moving toward home. ## Relationships ### [Eureka the Kitten](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/eureka_the_kitten) _friendship_ Dorothy is the owner and caretaker of Eureka, who is a mischievous but beloved pet. ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Wizard share a close bond as fellow travelers from the human world and trusted companions. ### [Princess Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/princess_ozma) _friendship_ Dorothy and Ozma are close friends and confidantes, with Ozma often welcoming Dorothy as an honored guest in Oz. ### [Zeb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/zeb) _friendship_ Dorothy and Zeb are childhood friends and companions on their adventures, sharing a loyal and caring bond. ### [Jim the Cab-Horse](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/jim_the_cab_horse) _friendship_ Dorothy treats Jim with kindness and affection, and he serves as her loyal steed and friend. ### [The Tin Woodman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_tin_woodman) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Tin Woodman are dear friends, with the Woodman always ready to protect and help her. ### [Eureka the Kitten](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/eureka_the_kitten) _friendship_ Dorothy is the owner and caretaker of Eureka, who is a mischievous but beloved pet. ### [The Wizard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/the_wizard) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Wizard share a close bond as fellow travelers from the human world and trusted companions. ### [Zeb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/characters/zeb) _friendship_ Dorothy and Zeb are childhood friends and companions on their adventures, sharing a loyal and caring bond. ## In the story ### [To My Readers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/to-my-readers) Reaffirmed as a central character in the Oz series, beloved by readers. ### [Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/dorothy-and-the-wizard-in-oz) The young protagonist, navigating the underground world with her companions. ### [The Earthquake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/dorothy_and_the_wizard_in_oz_se/chapters/i-the-earthquake) Arrives by train from San Francisco, carrying her kitten Eureka in a birdcage.
