# How does Domnei develop the theme of Self-Sacrifice and Redemption?

> Domnei by James Branch Cabell

## Answer

Domnei by James Branch Cabell develops Self-Sacrifice and Redemption across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Characters repeatedly sacrifice their own safety, honor, and happiness for the beloved, as seen when Melicent trades herself to Demetrios for Perion's freedom, and when Perion refuses to use the magic sword Flamberge to gain an unfair advantage.

Perion's willingness to forfeit his life for love suggests a theme of sacrifice in pursuit of redemption or fulfillment.

Perion's refusal of Melicent's love and his confession of sins highlight his struggle for redemption through self-denial.

Perion chooses to leave Melicent rather than drag her into a life of hardship, and Melicent sacrifices her future comfort to wed him.
