## Who they are

Mrs. Brown punches meal tickets and sweeps the halls with feverish, ill-suited strokes, her yellow hair straggling and her high heels clicking — a girl's figure with a widow's eyes. Helen longs to befriend her but is held back by shyness and by the guilty knowledge that she eats cinnamon rolls in her room to save money. Mrs. Brown embodies the precariousness of women alone, and Helen's silent theft of the broom to spare her is one of the novel's tenderest gestures.
