Chapter 3
I

Paul shows her his telegraph equipment, and they both feel an unspoken connection. He invites her for a drive on Sunday, leaving her elated.

Spring arrives capriciously, bringing both hope and a killing frost that devastates the family's crop. Helen's father despairs over the mortgage, but Helen feels a surge of youthful strength and determination. She goes to town to see Paul, but instead receives a note from him saying he has a new job and must leave that night, asking her to meet him by the bridge. She agrees, stunned by the news.
Chapter 5

Helen leaves Masonville for Sacramento to attend telegraphy school, accompanied by Mrs. Updike. She settles into a rented room and begins to adjust to city life, while reflecting on her promise to write to Paul. The chapter also includes a flashback to a farewell meeting with Paul, where they confess their love and sorrow at his departure for a job in Ripley.
